Our Story
The origins of golf are unclear and much debated. However, it is generally accepted that modern golf developed in Scotland from the Middle Ages onwards. Stick and ball games have been around for many centuries and were played by Native Americans as well as many other cultures, but golf as we know it today, which is played over 18 holes, originated in Scotland.

NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH AND CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE
Today, Native American tribes have founded many golf courses across our nation. We believe this provides our indigenous youth with a cultural connection and a sense of pride to pursue this popular game while also making cross-cultural connections within our American golf culture.

Our founder, Larry Littlebird (Laguna/Kewa Pueblos), had a strong background in baseball during college in Oakland, California. Later, after returning to his homelands of New Mexico, he became a renowned storyteller and educational specialist, teaching life skills to youth through storytelling. He developed the educational program Learning to Listen, which has been taught to audiences of all ages across the globe. We integrate these deep listening principles into our youth programs.

GOLF FOR GROWTH, Program Director, Hunter Littlebird, furthers our founder's life work by fostering cross-cultural, intergenerational exchanges that nurture healthy mentorships between youth and elders, guiding them toward positive life choices.

While our emphasis is on supporting indigenous youth and underserved youth in New Mexico communities, we also value the connections with our tri-cultures that share this beautiful state of ours. Our programs are open to all youth with sponsored scholarships available for those who need financial assistance.
